OWNERS BIOGRAPHY

Russ Olsen is the owner of Great Western Lacrosse. He is a Physical Educator in San Diego and is pursuing his Master's Degree at National University. Russ is 48 years old and was one of the founders of Great Western Lacrosse in 1984, along with his college buddy, Tommy Hannum. They created the lacrosse camp as a school project through the Physical Education Department in theruss1.gif (47291 bytes) spring of 1984. Over 2000 young student athletes have gone through the summer training sessions. Many have gone on to very successful collegiate lacrosse careers. In fact, in some years, more than half of the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League's All-Stars were former graduates of Great Western Lacrosse.
Russ began his lacrosse at Novato High School in Northern California where he won the first two HS State Championships as a player.  Russ went on to play college lacrosse at San Diego State University where he won the Team MVP trophy as well as San Diego State's "Athlete of the Year" in 1985 & 1986. He finished his collegiate career at the SDSU All Time Scoring Champion and still holds that record today. He also had the opportunity to play world caliber lacrosse. He played in the 1984 Olympic Exhibition Lacrosse games in Los Angeles. He graduated in 1986 with a Physical Education degree and started coaching the very next year.
He began his coaching career at Patrick Henry where he took a team from 1-15 to the State Championship. He is the first coach in west coast history to win two state titles with two separate high school teams. He did this is a three year span (1995 with Patrick Henry & 1998 with Serra). He has accumulated more wins as a coach that any other high school coach in San Diego County history, winning his 150th game in the 1998 State Championship game and is 9 wins away from his 250th win. His 1998 Serra team was also ranked 17th in the Nation, the highest ranking of any team in the west to this date. He was asked by Warrior Lacrosse to go to Japan to teach the first Lacrosse Camp in Tokyo in the spring of 1996 which was one of the highlights of his lacrosse career.  He is currently the Head Varsity Boys Coach at Canyon Crest Academy HS in San Diego.
